Why a Covenant?
The Community Covenant sets out the relationship between the community and those within the Military Community. It recognizes that the whole community has a moral obligation to members of the Military Community and it establishes how they should expect to be treated.
The covenant’s principles are that:
- the military community should not face disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services
- special consideration is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most, such as the injured and the bereaved
The covenant exists to redress the disadvantages that the Military Community may face in comparison to other citizens and to recognize sacrifices they have made.
The Community Covenant is supported by area houses of worship, business entities, civic groups and government agencies. The Community Covenant encourages local communities to support the Military Community in their area and promote public understanding and awareness. The Community Covenant is a public pledge from businesses and other organizations who wish to demonstrate their support for the Military Community.
The Community Covenant complements, at a local level, commitments of government and national agencies or organizations, which outlines the moral obligation between the nation, the government and the Military Community.
The goal of the Community Covenant is to encourage local communities to support the Military Community in their area and promote understanding and awareness among the public of issues affecting the Military Community.
Many people have become involved in supporting the Military Community through service charities or partnering with other organizations to serve those who have served us. They have shown their support through fundraising, military celebrations and open days, attending homecoming parades and repatriation ceremonies and offering commercial discounts.
Even simple demonstrations of support, such as displaying the flag in cars and businesses, have had a positive effect and boosted the morale of our Military Community.
The Community Covenant seeks to build on this local level of support by increasing the awareness and engagement of others within the community in which they live.
The Community Covenant with Veterans and Military Families is a guide detailing areas that organizations within the community can join together in addressing the problems encountered by members of the Military Community.
The guide provides a vision and action plan for 10 areas affecting the Military Community.
Planning a Community Covenant will take time, but it can be an excellent addition to your Veterans Awareness Program.
